Accelerating the Maritime Energy Transition

The 13th Monaco Energy Boat Challenge, scheduled from July 8 to 11, 2026, marks a critical gathering for the future of maritime engineering. Hosted by the Yacht Club de Monaco under the 'Monaco, Capital of Advanced Yachting' initiative, this four-day event focuses heavily on accelerating the energy transition within the maritime sector. Over 1,000 students, researchers, engineers, and manufacturing professionals from around the world are convening in the Principality to test and compare new propulsion systems.

The 2026 edition features 52 international teams representing 21 nationalities, underscoring the global urgency to decarbonize marine transport. Supported by organizations such as the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, UBS, BMW, and SBM Offshore, the challenge functions as a premier incubator for sustainable maritime technologies. Bernard d’Alessandri, Director and General Secretary of the Yacht Club de Monaco, notes that the event has evolved into a vital space where ideas circulate and the next generation of engineers collaborates directly with industry professionals.

Industry Heavyweights Meet Next-Generation Talent

A defining characteristic of the Monaco Energy Boat Challenge is its ability to bridge the gap between academic research and commercial shipbuilding. Major industry players attending the event include renowned builders and firms such as Safe Harbor, Oceanco, Ferretti Group, Azimut | Benetti Group, and Lürssen. Through the Corporate Mentoring Programme, partner companies provide participating teams with technical expertise, critical feedback, and real-world industry perspectives. This year, the initiative connects 20 professionals with 22 participating teams.

Safe Harbor, an event partner, is actively involved with two teams competing in the Energy Class: Hydrogadz from École Nationale Supérieure des Arts et Métiers and TAMEO Energy from École Nationale Supérieure de Techniques Nationaux Paris. These students receive comprehensive support in technical project management and utilize the group's facilities. Furthermore, Safe Harbor provided sea trial access at their site in La Seyne-sur-Mer, enabling the teams to test their vessels under real marine conditions prior to the main event.

Alejandro Velez, Director of UBS Monaco, Spain & Portugal, emphasized the importance of this cross-collaboration. He stated that supporting this pioneering initiative encourages the emerging talent responsible for building cleaner and more efficient maritime mobility. Velez also highlighted that the challenge perfectly illustrates how bold ideas and collaboration can drive significant future change.

Technological Innovations on the Water

The competition is structured into four distinct categories: the Energy Class, AI Class, SeaLab Class, and Open Sea Xperience. Across these classes, contestants present a diverse array of projects utilizing electric power, hydrogen fuel cells, methanol, and foiling architectures.

For clarity, these technologies function as follows:

  • Methanol: An alternative liquid fuel that offers a high energy density, explored for its potential to drastically reduce carbon emissions compared to traditional diesel.
  • Foiling: The use of underwater hydrofoils that lift the boat's hull above the water's surface at speed, significantly reducing hydrodynamic drag and increasing overall energy efficiency.
  • Hydrogen Fuel Cells: Systems that generate electricity through a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen, emitting only water vapor.

To support these advanced power systems, NatPower H serves as the official hydrogen supplier, ensuring all refuelling requirements are met. The event is additionally supported by ESA NanoTech, a company specializing in the sustainable production of graphene. Graphene is a nanomaterial recognized in the maritime sector for its exceptional mechanical strength and conductive properties.

Commercial Success: The Rise of Nemo-Systems

The transition from student project to viable commercial enterprise is a primary goal of the Monaco Energy Boat Challenge. A prime example at the 2026 event is Nemo-Systems, a maritime tech startup founded by former participants Maëlle Truchement, Simon Dorthe, and Marc Guynot. Evolving from their experience with EPFL's Swiss Solar Boat team, the founders have developed a sophisticated onboard data collection and analysis system.

This technology will be fitted to all participating boats during the 2026 competition. For Energy Class vessels, the system provides detailed monitoring of energy performance, while other categories benefit from real-time geolocation tracking. Maëlle Truchement, CEO of Nemo-Systems, explained that the technology measures voltage, current, and energy efficiency, pushing this data to a live race platform for officials and teams to monitor consumption and rankings. Nemo-Systems was recently named one of five MonacoTech finalists out of over a hundred applicants, highlighting the entrepreneurial viability fostered by the event.

Open Source Knowledge and Global Forums

Beyond the on-water competition, the event facilitates rigorous academic and professional discourse. On Thursday, July 9, the Advanced Yachting Technology Conference will explore monitoring systems for the yachting industry, focusing on cutting-edge innovations. This is followed by the 7th Alternative Fuels & Sustainable Yachting Conference on Friday, July 10, organized alongside the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation. The Friday conference will analyze diverse decarbonization pathways, including wind power, electric battery advancements, methanol, and nuclear propulsion.

Furthermore, the Tech Talks on Friday, July 10, offer an open-source platform for teams to present their progress to the public and the International Jury. These discussions cover eco-design, lifecycle analysis, and ergonomics, culminating in the Innovation, Design, and Eco-Design Awards.

The stakes are equally high for the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation Sustainable Yachting Technology Award. Finalists—including the University of Genoa, ENSAM - Hydrogadz, Politecnico di Torino, and Kumaraguru College of Technology—will present their solutions for energy efficiency and emission reductions. The winning university or research project will receive a €25,000 grant to support the development and implementation of their technology.

Looking Ahead to 2027 and Beyond

The influence of the Monaco Energy Boat Challenge continues to expand geographically and academically. Alongside the 33 participating universities, the 2026 edition welcomes 14 universities attending purely as observers. This includes a prominent American delegation with representatives from Colombia University, George Washington University, Howard University, and Florida International University. These institutions are attending to study the ecosystem firsthand, with the explicit goal of entering the competition in 2027.

To immerse the public in these developments, the Monaco Energy Boat Challenge Village is open free of charge from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM, between July 9 and 11. Visitors can access a live TV studio broadcasting the contests, participate in the virtual Winch Challenge simulator, and attend the daily awards ceremonies held at 5:30 PM.
